Heterogeneous responses to price: Evidence from residential water consumers

چکیده

Public utilities may respond to demand or supply fluctuations by adjusting prices ration quantity. This approach's efficacy and distributional impacts depend on households' heterogeneous price sensitivity, which we estimate in a market for residential water usage. Our household-level panel data features large change marginal novel measure of local hydrological stress. Contrary prior research, find that heavy-usage households are more sensitive than other households, elasticity is largely invariant household wealth. These findings suggest price-based rationing can be an effective tool reduce

Heterogeneous Demand Responses to Discrete Price Changes

Abstract. This paper discusses the possibility of exploiting price variations that may occur during the survey period of any household expenditure survey in order to identify heterogeneous demand responses to discrete price changes. This is feasible since expenditure surveys usually contain a large number of observations. The principal difficulty for estimation arises from the observation windo...

The Value of Distributed Energy Resources for Heterogeneous Residential Consumers

The presence of behind-the-meter rooftop PV and storage in the residential sector is poised to increase significantly. Here we quantify in detail the value of these technologies to consumers and service providers. We characterize the heterogeneity in household electricity cost savings under time-varying prices due to consumption behavior differences. The top 15% of consumers benefit two to thre...

To What Electricity Price Do Consumers Respond? Residential Demand Elasticity Under Increasing-Block Pricing

It is straightforward to evaluate how a perfectly-optimizing, perfectly-informed customer will respond to a non-linear price schedule, but such a customer is rare. In the common case of increasing-block pricing of water and electricity, consumers do not know what marginal price they face during a billing period, because they do not know what demand shocks will occur during the period. If consum...

Price Bubbles Spillover among Asset Markets: Evidence from Iran

T his paper investigates the existence of possible spillover effects among four main asset markets namely foreign exchange, stock, gold, and housing markets in Iran from 2002:03 to 2015:06. For this purpose, we have exploited Sigma-Point Kalman Filter (SPKF) to extract the bubble component of assets prices in the aforementioned Markets. Then, in order to analyze the price bubbles spi...

Do Informed Consumers Reduce the Price and Prevalence of Counterfeit Drugs? Evidence from the Antimalarial Market

As in other markets with experts, healthcare markets are characterized by asymmetric information. Providers may use this information advantage to increase profits. I conduct an audit study to test whether improved customer information about healthcare purchases improves customer well-being through reducing prices and improving quality. I send pairs of covert shoppers to medical outlets in Ugand...
